Finn’s Portrait of John Jones for Esquire Magazine

Back in April, I got a call from Michael Norseng, Photo Director at Esquire, asking if I’d be interested in shooting a piece for their upcoming “How to Be a Man” issue, profiling a grief counselor nicknamed Dr. Death.

Where do I sign-up?

An interesting turn to this assignment was that the writer of the piece is the son of Dr. Death (whose name is John Jones). I never really get to shoot with or collaborate with writers, so I was pretty excited to work with both son/writer, father/subject. I was equally excited when I found out that the writer was Chris Jones, who has written epic tales for the magazine over the years. My personal favorites are his storiesThe Things That Carried Him, and his piece Home, which became the book Too Far From Home: A Story of Life and Death in Space. To make matters more amazing, Chris and I quickly realized that we went to University together, where we shared a passion for our student radio station, CJMQ, as DJ’s. Chris DJ’d and managed the station, and I DJ’d a show with a friend called the Sunday Afternoon Burnout Show (no seriously, that’s what it was called). Needless to say, we had a great time catching-up, and trading stories from when we last saw each other.

I’m really happy with how the piece turned out, and I’m very grateful to Chris & John for the amount of time they spared with me. Here’s the layout of opening spread:

Ford Fiesta TimeSlice Behind the Scenes

Ford’s challenge: Create a new interactive project with a Time Freeze effect incorporating motion - within 3 weeks. Our solution: Use 36 Canon DSLRs to shoot a 120-degree sweep around the new Fiesta. Simultaneously shoot 12 motion videos on the same cameras, creating interactive hotspots that continue the frozen action on demand. We spent 2 days on location in Toronto’s Distillery District shooting 3 scenarios.

The layout for the Quilt shot originally posed a wardrobe challenge.  However, with the collaboration of a creative team and a talented seamstress the finished ensemble was a great success!
