Retro Thursday: Spring Love
1969. “The Summer of Love”. It must have been preceded by “The Spring of Lust”. This spring has either been a long time coming or a “Long Time Gone”. But I think it’s finally here. – |Evolve or Die|

Retro Thursday: Happy 10th Anniversary!
Do you remember the circumstances when you first met someone? The date? The season? The occasion? This is my tenth year working at the studio, and to mark my decade anniversary, I’d like to share the story of how I met Shin Sugino. Toronto was gearing up for its very first Toronto Festival of Fashion (now known as Fashion Week) at the Metro Convention Centre. The year was 1985 and I was working as a gallery administrator at Jane Corkin [...]

Retro Thursday: Happy Easter!
I’m not much of a religious man, I mean I like the holidays but I can’t stand the racket. I’m also not quite sure what the product is that they are selling. That being said, over the years whenever I see a cross I’m attracted to photographing it. I also had a very interesting piece of toast this morning. Happy Easter. – Eden Robbins

Retro Thursday: Let’s have a cold one!
These days, when you walk through the Sugino Studio doors and take a deep breath you’ll smell nothing but…alcohol! Don’t worry, you didn’t miss one of our famous parties, it’s all the beer and spirits shoots we’ve been lucky to do lately. Over the past few months we’ve seen the likes of Diageo, Bud Light, Alexander Keith’s and more set up in our studios. Some work you may have already seen — the rest, well, you’ll have to wait on [...]

Retro Thursday: The Art of the Matter
I noticed the other day that Sotheby’s Contemporary Art auction is about to happen. Unfortunately I’m not in the market, but it reminded me of the opportunities I had in the past working with Canadian Art magazine. I was regularly asked to take a portrait to accompany a feature story, here are a few of my faves. John Massey: Sculptor, Filmmaker, Digital Artist We’ve all done a few of these shots where we showed some equipment in the frame, [...]

Retro Thursday: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
Around 1997 I was assigned by Toronto Life magazine to photograph Michael Carlevale. The Toronto restaurant impresario (Prego, Byzantium, Enoteca) had recently opened his latest venture, Black and Blue. On the menu, STEAK! Of course there was also fine wine and, back in those days, a selection of Cuban cigars to be enjoyed at your table. I met Michael before the shoot at the restaurant and quickly realized two things. One, the notorious Kray Twins were not actually twins but triplets. Carlevale, their [...]

The Best of 2011
Happy New Year Everyone! After a restful holiday, the studio is back up and running in full force. Last week alone we had a wild Telus shoot, a men-in-uniform shoot and beer shoot. Although we have a full schedule and just rang in 2012 we took some time to reflect back on 2011. Thank you to all our clients and production partners for making it such a great year! Enjoy! Using Our Intuition
We were recently asked to shoot both motion and stills for Intuition- a new natural health product. Rob Quartly took the directing reins and Eden Robbins was DOP and stills photographer. See Rob’s comments below and some behind-the-scenes shots. Here’s the final spot. Here are Rob’s comments on the shoot: “This was a great project to be a part of. The core concept is simple – a reveal of the real/natural woman, her true self, underneath overdone fashion/make-up. We [...]

Retro Thursday: Some Things Never Go Out of Fashion
About a month ago Eden Robbins ran into someone on the street wearing Sugino Studio’s 1987 promo jacket. The jackets cost $500 each to manufacture and were given as holiday gifts. There are only 100 lucky owners of the jacket out there. This is Paul Rowan one of the co-owners and founders of Umbra. His wife, Marcy Ruby, received the jacket 20 years ago from Shin while working together on a project. Fast forward to this month [...]
