Retro Thursday: The Promo Mailers.

The Promo Mailers. We’ve all had them thrown onto our desk and in milliseconds they’re in the trash. Only a few have desk longevity. BUT, have you ever loved one so much that you’d be willing to keep it for 41 years? That’s exactly what Peter Croydon did with Shin Sugino’s promo mailer. Not only did he keep it but he mailed it back to Shin in mint condition. Forty-one years ago Shin sent out a promo to about 10 [...]

Retro Thursday: Did you know…

Before 501 Eastern Ave was known as 501 Studio it was a laundry mat. Shin Sugino bought the building in the early 1980s and turned it into half apartment half studio. Now 501 Eastern Ave is a fully equipped commercial film/photography studio. The picture below is of the sewage disposal plant pumping station on Eastern Avenue and Coxwell Avenue in 1915. WE WON THE LOTTERY!

…well not exactly, but we did do a lotto job!  Rob Quartly and Shin Sugino were recently asked to direct the newest ILC campaign with DraftFCB.  Andrew Nguyen at Topix did a great job with the matte paintings. It was a complex shoot but it couldn’t have turned out better! Check out the spot: Rob gives us an inside scoop: Performance, critical timing, special effects, matching visual perspectives and car photography. This was a tricky little spot. A good idea, [...]

Retro Thursday: Happy 10th Anniversary!

Do you remember the circumstances when you first met someone? The date? The season? The occasion? This is my tenth year working at the studio, and to mark my decade anniversary, I’d like to share the story of how I met Shin Sugino. Toronto was gearing up for its very first Toronto Festival of Fashion (now known as Fashion Week) at the Metro Convention Centre. The year was 1985 and I was working as a gallery administrator at Jane Corkin [...]

Retro Thursday: Let’s have a cold one!

These days, when you walk through the Sugino Studio doors and take a deep breath you’ll smell nothing but…alcohol! Don’t worry, you didn’t miss one of our famous parties, it’s all the beer and spirits shoots we’ve been lucky to do lately. Over the past few months we’ve seen the likes of Diageo, Bud Light, Alexander Keith’s and more set up in our studios. Some work you may have already seen — the rest, well, you’ll have to wait on [...]

Retro Thursday: Freeze Frame! Ford Fiesta

This was one of our favourite shoots, and probably the most technically challenging. In the summer of 2010, Tracy Jones from Y&R came up with a brilliant concept, and Shin Sugino set out to make it a reality. The idea was to create a 360-degree “time freeze” effect similar to The Matrix. However, since this was to be online and interactive the door was open to even more. How about shooting a 360° time freeze, and then punching in on [...]

Retro Thursday: Six Degrees of Shin-aration

Many successful people start off interning. Believe it or not most of our employees at the studio are ex-interns. Two weeks ago, a Humber College student, named Scott Poborsa walked into the Sugino Studio doors. Little did we know he would be the feature of this Retro Thursday. He had a story to tell that amazed us all. Scott walked up to Shin and said “you shot my mom before I was even born”. Gloria Poborsa use to model before [...]
