Retro Thursday: The Promo Mailers.

The Promo Mailers. We’ve all had them thrown onto our desk and in milliseconds they’re in the trash. Only a few have desk longevity. BUT, have you ever loved one so much that you’d be willing to keep it for 41 years? That’s exactly what Peter Croydon did with Shin Sugino’s promo mailer. Not only did he keep it but he mailed it back to Shin in mint condition. Forty-one years ago Shin sent out a promo to about 10 [...]

Sugino Likes: This Genie-ous Online Game

Can you beat the Akinator? This fun online game has been going around the office today. It’s like the robo version of 20 Questions. Some of you may have already tried it out, but if you haven’t get ready to be dumbfounded! Eden Robbins tried to get the Genie to guess Shin Sugino and look what it came up with…   Ha! Not too far off, right? Other than that he’s pretty spot on, guessing Japanese and Arab characters as [...]

We Love Food

At Sugino, we shoot a lot of food and beverages. Like our recent four day shoot for Diageo beverages.   And we eat a pretty amazing lunch together nearly every day, from some of the city’s tastiest restos. Check out a wicked time-lapse we made using the iPhone app ‘Time Lapse HD Camera’. So cool!! So it’s no wonder we were stoked to see Saveur‘s top recipes of 2011 recently. It’s the magazine’s annual roundup of the editors’ favourites from [...]

Sugino Likes: The Joy of Books

At Sugino Studio we love to share. Past blogs have offered you an intimate look at our toilet seats, Andy McLeod’s not-so-secret desire to be Vulcan and Eden Robbins’ JFK connection. We also love creative inspiration. And every once in a while we come across a piece of work that we think is particularly notable, and want to share. Watch. Think. Discuss. Enjoy! The Joy of Books, by Type Books:   The creator Sean Ohlenkamp, from Lowe Roche, had enlisted the [...]

Holiday Greetings!

Happy Holidays Everyone! 2011 has been a great year filled with plenty of hard work and even more fun memories. Whether on set wrangling birds or on location pouring a perfectly brewed drink, there are always memorable moments to be had at our Studio.   Our team has expanded this past year bringing many new faces. A few of these Suginoians reflect back on the past year: “Getting to work every day with people who actually like what they’re doing, [...]

Marketer of the Year!

It was an honour and pleasure to have the one and only Anne-Marie LaBerge in our Studio a couple weeks back. She was here for a photo-shoot. The pictures are now featured in the December/January issue of Strategy Magazine. Anne-Marie LaBerge is a great friend of Shin’s as they have worked together on Telus for the past decade. She’s not only the marketer of the year but our celebrity. The photographer, Koby, was excited to be a part of the [...]

It’s a Toto thing

People love working with Todd, Shin, Eden and Rob for many reasons. With motion and stills shoots — food, animals, products, celebs, period projects, automotive…you name it — constantly on the go, Sugino Studio is always buzzing with ideas and activity. When the work is done, we love sending people away happy.  As we all know, a great final product is the secret to a happy client but, you’d be amazed how many times people also comment on the toilets [...]

Occupied.

The Occupy protest came to Toronto this weekend just as Occupy Wall Street was observing it’s one-month anniversary. © CBC / Natalie Kalata As this unique protest movement gains a global footing, we at Sugino Studio were reminded of a piece Eden Robbins did a few years back featuring some very small, but very powerful, protesters. Eden was hired as the photographer on this very cool project — for Moms Against Climate Change — brilliantly directed by Shelly Lewis. He [...]
