Naoe Tani: Raw & Uncensored!

Just remember us little folks when you become famous! That’s what we should all say to Shin’s tintype assistant, Naoe Tani (pronounced “now-eh”). As Sugino Studio’s Studio Assistant, Naoe gets huge kudos for her contribution to the smooth running of the studio. She’s here on weekends so that at 9 a.m. Monday we walk into a fully functioning space. Naoe has a heart of gold…and an eye for perfection. Retro Thursday: Alexandra Then and Now

It was 2002 and we were shooting an ad for Pottery Barn. At the last minute, our hero girl did not want to let go of her mom so we could not photograph her.  It was Friday afternoon and we needed a little girl FAST!  What to do?  I called my sister and begged her to bring her daughter, my niece, Alexandra who was 3 at the time.  Though they were going on a family vacation to Portugal the next [...]

Retro Thursday: Did you know…

Before 501 Eastern Ave was known as 501 Studio it was a laundry mat. Shin Sugino bought the building in the early 1980s and turned it into half apartment half studio. Now 501 Eastern Ave is a fully equipped commercial film/photography studio. The picture below is of the sewage disposal plant pumping station on Eastern Avenue and Coxwell Avenue in 1915. Retro Thursday: Happy 10th Anniversary!

Do you remember the circumstances when you first met someone? The date? The season? The occasion? Toronto was gearing up for its very first Toronto Festival of Fashion (now known as Fashion Week) at the Metro Convention Centre. The year was 1985 and I was working as a gallery administrator at Jane Corkin [...]

Retro Thursday: From the Beginning

I grew up in the suburban Mecca of Markham, Ontario, in the 1970s. My parents moved the family there in the summer of 1973 when McCowan north of Steeles was a dirt road. I turned five that year. Markham was a hockey town. I played from the age of seven to seventeen. The cultural scene was pretty much limited to the now-forgotten Towne Theatre on Main Street – the converted jail/town hall — and the annual Markham Fair, which is [...]

Bucket-head.

It may seem as though Winter ended weeks ago (or never even came for that matter…) but today marks the first day of Spring. Even though Spring is  officially in full swing hockey season has yet to end. The 2012 Stanley Cup is only a couple months away! So let’s keep our hockey spirits high! Who are you cheering for? Here’s a hockey spot Andrew Wilcox shot with Edge MacLaren for HP. This is one of Andrew’s first motion spots [...]

Well, Sugino Studio set up cameras at an apple orchard and inside greenhouses to shoot a stills time-lapse of apple trees, apples, tomatoes and mushrooms growing [...]
