WE WON THE LOTTERY!

…well not exactly, but we did do a lotto job!  Rob Quartly and Shin Sugino were recently asked to direct the newest ILC campaign with DraftFCB.  Andrew Nguyen at Topix did a great job with the matte paintings. It was a complex shoot but it couldn’t have turned out better! Check out the spot: Rob gives us an inside scoop: Performance, critical timing, special effects, matching visual perspectives and car photography. This was a tricky little spot. A good idea, [...]

Retro Thursday: Let’s have a cold one!

These days, when you walk through the Sugino Studio doors and take a deep breath you’ll smell nothing but…alcohol! Don’t worry, you didn’t miss one of our famous parties, it’s all the beer and spirits shoots we’ve been lucky to do lately. Over the past few months we’ve seen the likes of Diageo, Bud Light, Alexander Keith’s and more set up in our studios. Some work you may have already seen — the rest, well, you’ll have to wait on [...]

Retro Thursday: A Kodak Moment

In this edition of Retro Thursday we look back at a client that has been in the news plenty recently. For Rob Quartly, Kodak was a great client to work with, especially on this project.  The concept was funny and brilliant. Kodak may be filing for Chapter 11, but Rob’s work is still earning its keep, thank you very much. “Ah, the wonderful world of parody. Given all the crazy things we do in this business, it is great to [...]

The Best of 2011

Happy New Year Everyone! After a restful holiday, the studio is back up and running in full force. Last week alone we had a wild Telus shoot, a men-in-uniform shoot and beer shoot. Although we have a full schedule and just rang in 2012 we took some time to reflect back on 2011. Thank you to all our clients and production partners for making it such a great year! Enjoy! Using Our Intuition

We were recently asked to shoot both motion and stills for Intuition- a new natural health product.  Rob Quartly took the directing reins and Eden Robbins was DOP and stills photographer. See Rob’s comments below and some behind-the-scenes shots. Here’s the final spot.   Here are Rob’s comments on the shoot:   “This was a great project to be a part of.  The core concept is simple – a reveal of the real/natural woman, her true self, underneath overdone fashion/make-up. We [...]

Retro Thursday: I’m a dancin’ man, and I just can’t lose!

Why is it that dramatic situations are so perfect for comedy? We had an operating room. And the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” provided tonal permission to be absurd. My favorite part of this Sears spot is when the surgeon asks for a long metal thing and gets a banana. – Rob Quartly – |Evolve or Die|

Retro Thursday: Lest We Forget

In honour of Remembrance Day tomorrow we have selected a particularly moving spot by Rob Quartly for Retro Thursday. Here is what he had to say about the piece: This was an emotional project.  I was truly honoured to be asked to be a part of it and also overwhelmed by the responsibility. How does one tell the story of 100 years of Canadian service in 60 seconds?   Initially, we were going to combine live action with historical footage, [...]

Retro Thursday: Rob Quartly’s “First Car”

“Remember your first car?” “None of the footage here is archival. We shot it all.” “It was a great concept and it opened the door to great emotions. Cool cars, (some goofy ones too) and such fun with the art and beauty departments.” “It never hurts to have a great soundtrack too: ‘Spirit in the Sky’. What a blast!” -Rob Quartly Do you remember your first car? We sure do! Read our stories on our Facebook page and share yours [...]

Happy Halloween!

At Sugino Studio we take Halloween very, very, VERY seriously! So seriously that we’ll even dress up on a day filled with back to back meetings, a pre-pro and a wardrobe call. The best part is seeing the faces of clients when they walk in and see us all done up. Check out the gang’s costumes below.     Try and guess who we are. The answers will be at the end of the post. Also for old times’ [...]

Rob Quartly + Tom Cavanaugh + Steadicam = A Fun Spot for CIBC

“I’ve worked many times with Tom Cavanaugh. You may know him from Ed, Scrubs and Love Monkey.  He is a consummate pro.  Aside from his tremendous performance ability he is also a very good technical actor.  He was perfect for this presenter style.  To ballet with the camera and hit marks and lines so very well you need really good talent.  It let me play with some dynamic steadi-cam moves and fit a ton of dialogue into 720 frames.” – [...]
