Just remember us little folks when you become famous! That’s what we should all say to Shin’s tintype assistant, Naoe Tani (pronounced “now-eh”). As Sugino Studio’s Studio Assistant, Naoe gets huge kudos for her contribution to the smooth running of the studio. She’s here on weekends so that at 9 a.m. Monday we walk into a fully functioning space. Naoe has a heart of gold…and an eye for perfection. She’s extremely talented, with her passion being tintype photography. The studio [...]

WE WON THE LOTTERY!
…well not exactly, but we did do a lotto job! Rob Quartly and Shin Sugino were recently asked to direct the newest ILC campaign with DraftFCB. Andrew Nguyen at Topix did a great job with the matte paintings. It was a complex shoot but it couldn’t have turned out better! Check out the spot: Rob gives us an inside scoop: Performance, critical timing, special effects, matching visual perspectives and car photography. This was a tricky little spot. A good idea, [...]

Retro Thursday: Happy Easter!
I’m not much of a religious man, I mean I like the holidays but I can’t stand the racket. I’m also not quite sure what the product is that they are selling. That being said, over the years whenever I see a cross I’m attracted to photographing it. I also had a very interesting piece of toast this morning. Happy Easter. – Eden Robbins

Raw & Uncensored: Burrito.
Not too long ago, October 2011 to be exact, Todd McLellan collaborated with Fast Company on an LED disassembly article. This time around Todd and Fast Company joined forces for a Chipotle burrito explosion shoot. Sounds crazy fun, eh? Check out the final shot. Todd’s disassembled lots of things, including an entire piano! But this was his first time disassembling food. Todd tells us how his first experience with a Chipotle burrito (at least, his first professional experience!) went. Working [...]

Here’s a hockey spot Andrew Wilcox shot with Edge MacLaren for HP. This is one of Andrew’s first motion spots [...]

Retro Thursday: Freeze Frame! Ford Fiesta
This was one of our favourite shoots, and probably the most technically challenging. In the summer of 2010, Tracy Jones from Y&R came up with a brilliant concept, and Shin Sugino set out to make it a reality. The idea was to create a 360-degree “time freeze” effect similar to The Matrix. However, since this was to be online and interactive the door was open to even more. How about shooting a 360° time freeze, and then punching in on [...]

Creativity isn’t just part of our job at Sugino Studio; it’s our way of being. When we step out of the studio doors, the creative juices keep flowing. Each of us, in some way, take our skills we apply at work into our personal lives. This past weekend Maciej Roszkowski, senior digital artist, was asked to take photos for an event. This is what he had to say about his experience: “Last week a friend of mine at fu-GEN theatre [...]
