Many successful people start off interning. Believe it or not most of our employees at the studio are ex-interns. Two weeks ago, a Humber College student, named Scott Poborsa walked into the Sugino Studio doors. Little did we know he would be the feature of this Retro Thursday. He had a story to tell that amazed us all. Scott walked up to Shin and said “you shot my mom before I was even born”. Gloria Poborsa use to model before [...]

Retro Thursday: Oh So Cosmo
The Board In 2007, we were asked by Elspeth Lynn and Lorraine Tao at Zig to shoot a spot announcing the arrival of Cosmo TV. The storyboard opened on a woman’s hand. A miniature guy slowly climbs the hand as if it were a rock face. When he reaches the top, the pinky finger on the woman’s hand extends. The guy gives a big sigh of relief and hugs the finger. He’s literally “wrapped around her finger.” The Challenge Cool [...]

Retro Thursday: Digi Style!
This Retro Thursday I’m (Miho Matsuoka, digital artist) going to take you all the way back and by back I mean way back to… you guessed it….2005. Shin Sugino and Foodland Ontario teamed up to create a series of commercials featuring various vegetables and fruits growing. How did they do it you ask ? Well, Sugino Studio set up cameras at an apple orchard and inside greenhouses to shoot a stills time-lapse of apple trees, apples, tomatoes and mushrooms growing [...]

Retro Thursday: A Kodak Moment
In this edition of Retro Thursday we look back at a client that has been in the news plenty recently. For Rob Quartly, Kodak was a great client to work with, especially on this project. The concept was funny and brilliant. Kodak may be filing for Chapter 11, but Rob’s work is still earning its keep, thank you very much. “Ah, the wonderful world of parody. Given all the crazy things we do in this business, it is great to [...]

The Best of 2011
Happy New Year Everyone! After a restful holiday, the studio is back up and running in full force. Last week alone we had a wild Telus shoot, a men-in-uniform shoot and beer shoot. Although we have a full schedule and just rang in 2012 we took some time to reflect back on 2011. Thank you to all our clients and production partners for making it such a great year! Enjoy! Castaway!
It’s December and winter is on its way in. Beautiful snow covering evergreen trees, kids cheerfully making forts, and holiday festivities happening all around. What better time to go down south…Huh? Eden Robbins and assistant Al Peacock got the opportunity to escape the declining temperature for a shoot in Miami, Florida. They shot the stills for the new Advil spot. Click here for larger image. Retro Thursday: I’m a dancin’ man, and I just can’t lose!
Why is it that dramatic situations are so perfect for comedy? We had an operating room. And the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” provided tonal permission to be absurd. My favorite part of this Sears spot is when the surgeon asks for a long metal thing and gets a banana. – Rob Quartly – |Evolve or Die|

Retro Thursday: A Brief Encounter Pays Off
Sometimes you just don’t know when, where, how or why ideas sprout up. But it doesn’t really matter when it’s a great idea — or a crazy one. Todd McLellan was going about his business (what business, we didn’t ask!) when he came up with this underwear idea. Todd persuaded Aaron Hoskins, a freelance PA we work with, to do a handstand with a “fresh” (or so Todd promised) pair of tighty whities over his head. “He wasn’t exactly head [...]

It’s a Toto thing
People love working with Todd, Shin, Eden and Rob for many reasons. With motion and stills shoots — food, animals, products, celebs, period projects, automotive…you name it — constantly on the go, Sugino Studio is always buzzing with ideas and activity. When the work is done, we love sending people away happy. As we all know, a great final product is the secret to a happy client but, you’d be amazed how many times people also comment on the toilets [...]

Retro Thursday: Rob Quartly’s “First Car”
“Remember your first car?” “None of the footage here is archival. We shot it all.” “It was a great concept and it opened the door to great emotions. Cool cars, (some goofy ones too) and such fun with the art and beauty departments.” “It never hurts to have a great soundtrack too: ‘Spirit in the Sky’. What a blast!” -Rob Quartly Do you remember your first car? We sure do! Read our stories on our Facebook page and share yours [...]
